Congratulations to the winner,
We love Dr. Seuss-but our two favorites
are Hop on Pop and Green Eggs and Ham. They are such fun books!
It amazes me how long of an attention span my children have when it comes to reading books together. They easily get distracted doing other activities, but will sit down and read a stack of books together, no problem. Even Ruby who isn't even 18 months old loves to read with me. She is pretty pushy about it too as she comes up to me and throws a board book in my lap. And when we finish she hands it to me again, and again.
Studies show that the more children read, the better readers they become. One study even showed that children who read 20 minutes or more per day scored in or above the 90th percentile; those who read less than 10 minutes scored in the 75th percentile.*
My boys' teachers know the importance of daily reading and have added it as a homework requirement, but even if it wasn't a requirement for school, they would do it on their own. Both are at such a great age for discovering new series and chapter books. The kind that they read non stop, cover to cover,
My girls love picture books and stories and especially enjoy them before bed time. We read nightly from a children's bible storybook and when I quiz them about what we read the night before I am always amazed at how much they remembered.
But it's not simply about reading more. Children who are actively engaged as they read—thinking about what they are reading versus looking passively at the words on the page—have been shown to regularly outperform children who are less engaged in what they are reading.
And it isn't about just reading to children, it is engaging them in the story. Asking them questions about what they read, making sure they comprehend the story and keeping then engaged.
